To Tweet or Not To Tweet

So, RNA conference-goers this year might have received their conference packs and noticed my name attached to a workshop on social networking. I'm eternally grateful that I'm doing this with Liz Fenwick who Knows What She's Talking About (or at least gives a smashing impression of it), but am also aware that I probably ought to actually do a bit of thinking about it beforehand. Couldn't hurt, right?

So. If you were going to a workshop on social media for authors, what would you want to know? Do you need to know basics, such as how to set up an account and which sites to use? Do you want to know statistics on social networking? For whom is it useful: published, unpublished, or publishing professionals? What should you Tweet about, upload or divulge--and what should you keep to yourself?

What do you want to know?

  1. Hmmm, difficult question. How long do you have? What about everything...
I think the last question is the most interesting for me, the do's and dont's in social media. Not very helpful, sorry.

  2. I won't be there to receive any wisdom *cries* But I'd say a focus on who social networking is useful for, and how - ie, using Twitter for promo stuff, using Blogspot or Livejournal effectively, how to find like-minded people, etc.

  3. I'd like to know how to broaden the reach of people I actually get to via Twitter,Facebook, Blog etc. I always feel that I'm preaching to the converted (ie, people who already know me) and I'd like to add to these.

Can I have my reward in chocolate please?

  4. Personally I can't wait to see your shoes!

But seriously: what I would like to know is how to effectively balance using social media with writing! Is it possible? Social media is taking over my life!

  5. Do's and don't's. Check.

    Who it's useful for. Check.

How to reach more people. Er...check (if Liz does it).

And how not to get sucked in by it. Um. This may take some time...
