Things I did today

MRI's are weird. Both boring and distracting. I figured I could spend the half hour or so I was forced to lie still inside a plastic tube to at least work on some story ideas, but it's kind of hard when it sounds like you're standing outside a nightclub and people keep turning pneumatic drills on right next to your head. Your head, which is being held totally immobile by two braces and a set of headphones pinning you to the floor of a plastic tube just wider than your shoulders. I'm not given to claustrophobia, but I seriously considered it there for a while.

Anyway. In the spirit of make-do-and-mend, I spent £14 on a new coat. Well, I spent £14 on making over an old coat, anyway. I've had this for maybe ten years, and it's time for an update. Whatcha think?

Yes, I will get back to some actual work soon. In addition to working on Kett's book, I also have the galley proofs of Still Waters to read. I might stay up tonight for a while and do that. After all, it's not like there's anything else going on tonight that might hold a person's interest.

  1. Coat looks good!

And you can use the "Me? No, I'm not claustrophobic" experience in a story, maybe.

  2. Hi Cat/Kate! I've had to go through quite a bit with MRI's and the time frame of them feels like forever! And they don't want you to adjust yourself between pictures so its worse. I usually get to the point when I'm ready to sleep when its just about over! They have open MRI's now and I tried it, so that may help if you have to ever have again (I hope you don't). Since I've been going through them with my pelvic area, its not as mad. Hope all is ok for you!

  3. P.S. much improvement adding the belt!

  4. Jan, I was trying to figure out a way to use it while I was in there! It hasn't happened yet, but I'm working on it.

Caffey, yes that is the thing, isn't it, staying still so long? I couldn't actually even tell how far into the tube I was since I couldn't move my head at all. The radiologist praised me for staying so still and I thought, well, what else was I supposed to do?

While I was in there, my mum (who'd driven me) was talking to a woman who was both asthmatic and severely claustrophobic and she was dreading it. I wonder if they had an open MRI for her?

The coat actually had a belt before, but it was a fabric one and much less dramatic than the wide leather.

  5. Escape pod? Maybe a cheap, second-hand one from a dodgy, cut-rate spaceport salesman?
